Narrowing
Narrowing and serrating are special types of manufacture similar to surface broaching, again carried out via the removal of shavings of material, and particularly well-suited for the modification of internal surfaces of holes, such as for winders, serrated or grooved surfaces.
It involves the creation of vertical grooves, be they straight or moulded, via the introduction of a special cutting tool that gradually removes sufficient material to acheive the shape and dimensions required. At the same time, it maintains narrow tollerances, which is why this technique can be found in a very wide range of applications in various manufacting and metal-mechanic sectors.
Narrowing and serration are carried out on numeric-control tool machines that use a straight-line motion - vertical or inclined - and unless there is surface broaching, this can be done both in open holes (where the tool comes out of the piece) or blind holes (where the tool blocks at a pre-set depth); the operation is repeated in succession, with growing depth of the cut each time.
Officine Meccaniche Marcucci has two narrowing machines to create internal grooved surfaces, with vertical, straight or moulded grooves as needed,
Narrowing operations require precision and attension to detail, like all such machining operations. The machines we use are primarily intended to create winders, power take-offs and other profiles. The narrowing of mechanical components like tongues and winders) is necessary, for instance, in the attachment of hubs to shafts.
